Mercedes GLC SUV to launch on June 2, 2016

Mercedes is set to launch the new GLC SUV in India on June 2, 2016. Based on the MRA platform as the C-class sedan, the GLC is an all-new vehicle for the Indian market and will occupy a segment previously left unchecked by the company.

The GLC sports a front-end design and headlamps similar to the C-class sedan's, while the interiors also feature a shared design. The SUV, however, has a taller cabin and longer wheelbase pointing to improved space.

In terms of equipment too, the GLC is expected to be on level with the C-class sedan.

Under the hood, the GLC will feature Mercedes’ 2.1-litre four-cylinder diesel engine that is used in a majority of the company’s India models. The engine is likely to be available in two states of tune – 170hp and 204hp – and will be paired to the company’s new nine-speed automatic gearbox.

A part of Mercedes’ 12 product plan for 2016, the SUV made its India debut at the Auto Expo earlier this year in the petrol GLC 300 guise. Given the uncertainty surrounding diesel, the petrol is likely to launch in India though it’s the diesel unit that is expected to be the mainstay.

The GLC will sit between the GLA and the GLE in the company’s product line-up and will rival the likes of the Audi Q5 and the BMW X3.
