SCOOP! Hyundai and Renault to use AMT tech

Hyundai and Renault will be the latest to join the AMT bandwagon. Both companies will source the AMT system from ZF Sachs instead of Magnetti Marelli as in the case of Maruti and Tata.

The first of the Hyundai products to get the AMT gearbox is likely to be the Grand i10 and later, the next-gen Eon. Renault, on the other hand, is likely to show it first with its upcoming small car that is all set to be revealed on May 20.

The AMT technology’s cost effectiveness and the ease of use are the core benefits that are helping its case. Unlike conventional automatic gearboxes, the AMT system essentially works with the help of actuators that control a traditional manual gearbox.

The AMT gearbox is bound to get more popular with more manufacturers likely to offer their cars with this technology. It has shortcomings like lack of smoothness and jerky power delivery, but it is the cheapest way to own an automatic car and is more fuel-efficient than conventional auto 'boxes. This is the reason why it has proven to be a hit among the masses.
