Volkswagen’s new compact sedan, the Ameo, was showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo. The German carmaker’s attempt at the compact sedan segment is likely to hit showrooms mid-year. Company sources tell us that the Ameo has finished its homologation tests but will initially come with only a single engine option, the tried and tested 1.2-litre petrol motor that also does duty in the Volkswagen Polo. This engine is a three-pot unit and churns out 75hp and 110Nm of torque and will be mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.
The diesel engine will be the four-cylinder, 1.5-litre EA 189 unit that does duty in VW’s Polo and Vento and the Skoda Rapid. However, this engine is scheduled to get an update soon and VW has decided to directly bring the new version of the engine to the Ameo. The updated EA 189 unit will come with a new localised turbocharger resulting in a slight bump in power to 112hp and will make its debut in the diesel Ameo. This motor will be seen under the hood of the Vento as well as the facelifted Rapid, but at a later stage. Also, in the wake of the recent emissions scandal, Volkswagen is ensuring that its cars come with the latest software that meets all emission regulations comfortably. The Ameo will take on the likes of the Dzire, Figo Aspire, Zest and recently updated Amaze.
