Triumph CKD models get Rs 40,000 to Rs 62,000 dearer

Price revision to come into effect from March 19; result of the government's decision to increase custom duty on CKD models.

Back in February, we told you that one brand that has been particularly affected by the change in government policy was Triumph Motorcycles. The British brand had announced last year that it wanted to locally assemble 90 percent of its products in India. However, the increase in CKD custom duties of five percent and the drop in CBU prices have dealt a double blow for Triumph. Even Triumph most affordable model, the Street Twin, will receive a hike of Rs 40,000 (ex-showroom, Mumbai).

The bike maker’s entire CKD line-up will see a hike ranging from Rs 40,000 to Rs 62,000, effective March 19, 2018. The company’s middle-weight naked bike, the Street Triple will see a markup of around Rs 50,000, while the Thruxton R’s price will be subjected to the highest increase of Rs 62,000. However, the new Speedmaster already had this accounted for in its launch price, and hence, the price remains unchanged. Triumph also doesn’t seem to have changed the price of the Tiger 800 XCA – the only Tiger 800 model currently listed on the Mumbai price list. This is probably because it is the only version in the current range that's still available before the new Tiger 800 range arrives shortly. This lower price should help the company clear the remaining stocks.

Commenting on the revision of custom duty, Triumph Motorcycles' India MD, Vimal Sumbly, said, “After the budget, this is a great initiative to cut import duties on CBUs, but for CKDs where local assembly is done in India, the import duties are increased by 5 percent and the FTA remains unchanged. We would urge the government to relook into this area.”

Here’s the full list of the revised (ex-showroom, Mumbai) prices.
