The Renault Triber is a very unique proposition, with its USP being seating for seven while measuring under 4 metres. It also offers genuine versatility, practicality and flexibility that is very difficult to match at this price point. So, if you are on the lookout for a used, affordable people mover, the Triber definitely is worth considering. However, before you go ahead and buy it, here are a few things to consider.
The Triber was launched in August 2019 in a single engine-gearbox combination, and an AMT gearbox option was added to the line-up in 2020 after the implementation of BS6 emission norms. Powering the Renault Triber is an upgraded version of the Kwid’s 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine, which makes 72hp and 96Nm, and comes paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard.
The ARAI-rated fuel economy figures for the Triber are 19kpl and 18.2kpl, for the manual and AMT versions (BS6), respectively. Between the two versions, the manual Triber feels nicer to drive and is more fuel efficient as well. The AMT auto is convenient, but the gearbox is slow to respond and quite jerky with its shifts, which doesn’t make for a pleasing experience.
The Renault Triber will leave you impressed with the space it has on the inside, even in the third row. It may be tight for larger-sized passengers, but average-sized adults will fit in the third row just fine. With all seats in place, the Triber offers 84 litres of luggage room, which is barely enough for your grocery bags. But you can expand the luggage room by removing the split third row seats. With both seats removed, the Triber has a huge 625 litres of luggage room.
There are four trims for you to choose from – RXE, RXL, RXT and RXZ. The top-spec Triber RXZ features an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a digital instrument cluster, AC vents in all three rows, a cooled centre box, keyless entry, push-button start/stop, power windows, projector headlamps with LED DRLs and a rear wash-wipe.
In terms of safety, all Tribers come with three-point seat belts on all rows, ABS, reverse parking sensors and at least two airbags. Additionally, top-spec trims get the added safety of front-side airbags and a rear parking camera. It’s worth stretching for the RXZ trim as they come fully loaded. The lower variants are quite basic and are best avoided unless you’re on a strict budget.
In terms of maintenance, the Renault Triber is quite reliable, with only a few problems reported by owners. The spares are also relatively cheap; however, Renault’s service network isn’t the most widespread so that’s worth keeping in mind.
Interior rattles
Few owners have complained about rattling noises coming from inside their Triber. So before you buy one, take it out for a drive and listen out for any rattling noises emerging from behind the dashboard, doorcards, etc.
AMT gearbox
It’s also worth checking the AMT gearbox because some owners have faced shifting issues with it. Have the gearbox and clutch looked at by a mechanic before making the purchase since this can be an expensive fix. Some owners have also said that their Triber struggles to climb steep inclines when they are fully loaded with the AC on. So if you live in a hilly region, this is worth keeping in mind.
Rs 5 lakh-7 lakh
Buying a used Renault Triber for anywhere between Rs 5 lakh to 7 lakh, depending upon the variant and gearbox, represents decent value. There’s plenty of examples available in the used market and the demand isn’t high as well, so you can try to haggle with the price.
