I’m looking to buy a new vehicle, preferably an EV, under Rs 25 lakh. However, I’m confused if the additional upfront investment is worth it. I have driven the MG Windsor and Tata Curvv, and I want to know if these would be better options than the Mahindra XUV700 or MG Hector.

Autocar India says: For city driving, electric vehicles (EVs) deliver an unmatched experience. No internal combustion engine (ICE) car can rival an EV’s refinement, smoothness and ease of driving. However, there are some important factors to consider before you make a decision.

Charging Accessibility: Do you have the ability to install a home charger, or does your building society offer EV charging facilities? If not, you may have to rely on public charging, which can be unreliable and potentially frustrating.

Primary or Secondary Car: Will this EV be your primary vehicle? And do you plan to take it on long-distance trips? EVs are ideal for city use, but they are less convenient for longer drives due to limited charging infrastructure and the occasional inoperability of public chargers.

If you’re looking for a dedicated city car, we’d confidently recommend an EV. Between the Tata Curvv and MG Windsor, the Windsor offers better value and a more refined interior.

However, if long-distance driving or versatility is a priority, an ICE vehicle might suit you better. The XUV700 is a great choice for longer trips, with strong engine options and a balanced ride and handling profile. Alternatively, the MG Hector is an excellent city car with a focus on rear-seat comfort, ideal for chauffeured drives. Just keep in mind that the Hector’s softer suspension limits stability at higher speeds on the highway.

Ultimately, it depends on your usage. If city driving is your main concern, go for the EV. For all-round versatility, an ICE option like the XUV700 or Hector could be a better fit.
