Toyota has just launched the Rumion MPV in India, which is essentially a rebadged version of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. With this, Toyota now has the largest MPV portfolio in the country comprising four models – the Rumion, Innova Crysta, Innova Hycross, and Vellfire. If you’re considering purchasing either of the two badge-engineered MPVs, read on to see how they differ.

Rumion vs Ertiga: variant line-up and price

Maruti Suzuki offers the Ertiga in four trims – LXi, VXi, ZXi and ZXi+. Whereas Toyota offers the Rumion in three trims – S, G and V – that are equivalent to Ertiga’s top three trims. This gives the Ertiga the advantage of a lower starting price (Rs 8.64 lakh for the LXi MT variant).

The Rumion is priced between Rs 10.29 lakh-13.68 lakh, while the Ertiga is priced between Rs 8.64-13.08 lakh. The Toyota costs Rs 51,000 to 61,000 more than the Maruti, depending on the variant.

Rumion vs Ertiga: exterior and interior

On the outside, the Rumion and Ertiga have a lot in common. However, the Rumion gets an Innova Crysta-like grille, new trapezoidal fog lamp housings, and a new bumper. Furthermore, the Toyota also gets a new design for the 15-inch alloy wheels. At the back, both are nearly identical with the only differentiating factor being the badging.

Inside, the Rumion and Ertiga are nearly identical, with the only difference being the badges. Both get a dual-tone interior finish with faux-wood inserts, a 7-inch touchscreen in the centre of the dash, and a flat-bottom steering wheel with wood inserts.

Rumion vs Ertiga: features

The Rumion shares its entire features list with the Ertiga, except for two bits. While the Ertiga only gets the Arkamys-tuned speaker system and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay on the top-spec ZXI+ trim, the Rumion gets them on the top two trims – G and V. However, the Rumion misses out on a 12V socket for the third row, which the Ertiga gets. Both MPVs get automatic climate control, a reverse camera, an analogue instrument cluster with a digital MID, and connected car tech. In terms of safety features, the Rumion and Ertiga get four airbags, ESC, hill-hold assist and seat belt reminder for all seats.

Rumion vs Ertiga: powertrain and fuel efficiency

Both MPVs also share their engine and gearbox options. They get a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 103hp and 137Nm of torque, which can be had with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Both also get a factory-fitted CNG kit, producing 88hp and 121.5Nm of torque in CNG mode and 101hp and 136Nm in petrol mode, and only get the manual gearbox option.

The Rumion and Ertiga have a fuel efficiency of 20.51kpl (claimed) with the manual gearbox, and 26.11km/kg (claimed) for the CNG versions. However, the Rumion automatic has a claimed fuel efficiency of 20.11kpl, whereas the Ertiga automatic returns 20.30kpl (claimed).

Rumion vs Ertiga: warranty

Another major difference between the Rumion and Ertiga, besides the design, is the additional warranty provided by Toyota. The Rumion gets a standard warranty of three years/1,00,000km, which can be extended to five years/2,20,000km. On the other hand, Maruti Suzuki offers a two-year/40,000km warranty as standard, which can be extended to a five-year/1,00,000km one.

The additional warranty provided by Toyota could sway buyers towards the Rumion and away from the Ertiga, as the price difference between the two is not much.

Rumion vs Ertiga: rivals

The Rumion and Ertiga compete with each other, as well as the Maruti Suzuki XL6 (Rs 11.56 lakh-14.66 lakh) and Kia Carens (Rs 10.45 lakh-18.45 lakh) MPV.
