Datsun Redigo launched at Rs 2.39 lakh

Datsun today launched the Redigo at a price of Rs 2.39 lakh for the base D variant going up to Rs 3.34 lakh for the top S variant. The Redigo is offered in five variants – D, A, T, T (O) and S.

With this highly aggressive entry-level price, it is now the most affordable 800cc car in India. Datsun, which has the Maruti Alto in sights, has initiated a price war in the high-volume entry-level hatchback segment. The Alto is not only the market leader in the hatchback segment currently, but is also the top-selling car in the country. The Alto has reigned supreme without much competition so far, with the first proper sign of a contest coming from the Kwid with its aggressive price and SUV-like appeal. The Redigo now undercuts both rivals – the Alto by Rs 10,000 and even its sibling Kwid by Rs 23,000 and offers a high dose of style.

The Redigo shares much of its styling with the concept car which made its debut at Auto Expo 2014. The edgy styling is further complemented by the high ground-clearance of 185mm, which is always appreciated given the Indian road conditions. It is based on the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s flexible Common Module Family (CMF) engineering architecture as the Kwid, but stylistically is a departure from its SUV-like cues.

The Redigo is Datsun’s third offering in India and also its most affordable one yet. The car is equipped with a 54hp, 799cc, three-cylinder petrol engine, which is paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The engine is the same unit that powers the Renault Kwid. Like the Kwid, the Redigo too claims a class-leading ARAI fuel-efficiency figure of 25.17kpl.

Unable to find much success with the Go, the carmaker is banking on the Redigo to revive its sales figures in the country. Moreover, Datsun is also looking at ramping up its dealership network to 300 outlets by end of March 2017, up from the current 217 outlets.
