The current-generation (W212) Mercedes E-class was launched in India way back in 2009. The carmaker initially launched the E-class only with V6 engines and the range started at a price of Rs 46.9 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
But with the rupee getting weaker, the price of the E 350 started spiralling northwards, resulting in a substantial drop in demand. The effect of currency fluctuation and high taxes was also evident in low demand for other V6 engined competitors from Audi, BMW and Jaguar.
In June last year, Mercedes-Benz gave the E-class sedan a mid-cycle refresh, but launched it with only four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. The carmaker also launched the high-performance twin-turbo V8-powered E 63 AMG as a halo offering in the E-class line-up soon after.
Although, it wasn’t officially confirmed by Kern, the Mercedes boss did drop hints that his company is looking to launch the updated E 350 sedan in India. The updated E 350 will come with the traditional-style Mercedes radiator grille. Expect the new E 350 range to start at around a whopping Rs 58 lakh (ex-showroom, estimated) when it hits Indian showrooms around the festive season.
