Volvo has its sight set firmly on the luxury sedan segment with the launch of the new S90 in India. A replacement for the ageing S80, the new luxury sedan from Volvo is based on the modular SPA platform and features the automaker’s latest design language that was first seen on the XC90 SUV. The cabin too has a lot in common with the range-topping SUV, with ample space for occupants, especially at the rear.
Engines
The S90 is currently available with just one diesel engine. The unit is the same 2.0-litre unit as on the XC90 but in a lower D4 tune developing 190hp. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox that sends power to the front wheels. In 2017, Volvo will add a twin-turbo iteration of the engine to the line-up. The D5 will make 235hp and will get an all-wheel drive. Also expected at a later stage is a petrol unit, most probably as a hybrid.
Equipment
The S90 is available in the fully loaded Inscription trim only and gets standard features such as drive modes, auto park assist, a Bowers & Wilkins audio system with subwoofer, satellite navigation, rear air suspension, four-zone climate control, nappa leather upholstery, electric adjust front seats with memory and ventilation and a powered tailgate. However, the radar-based safety features on offer on the XC90 Excellence will not be available on the S90.
Price and rivals
Volvo has priced the new S90 at an aggressive Rs 53.5 lakh (pre-octroi, ex-showroom, Mumbai). This positions the fully loaded Volvo closer to the entry- level diesel variants of its rivals, the BMW 5-series, Mercedes E-class, Audi A6 and Jaguar XE. The S90 is only available as a CBU import.
Deliveries
Booking for the S90 sedan are currently open and Volvo will start deliveries of the first batch of cars from December 2016.
