Along with the new RSV4 1100, Aprilia also showcased the RS 660 at the 2018 EICMA. The new concept bike is good news for middleweight sports bike fans, as it is a segment that has been neglected by manufacturers given the lack of sales but is witnessing a revival now.
As expected, the styling of the concept motorcycle has been inspired by the RSV4 1100 and it looks sharp and purposeful. Powering the Aprilia RS 660 is a 660cc parallel twin-cylinder motor based on the V4 powerplant as seen on its flagship superbike. According to Aprilia, a V-Twin layout was selected as it offers better packaging and allows the engine to be used as a stressed member.
An interesting aspect of the concept bike is that the rear monoshock has been directly mounted onto the swingarm and there’s no linkage. Aprilia claims that by skipping the linkage they have been able to cut down on weight and it also improves aesthetics endowing the tail section with a clean and uncluttered look. While the Aprilia RS 660 is a sporty offering, the Italian brand claims that it has comfortable riding dynamics with raised clip-on handlebar and slightly rear-set footpegs. The top-spec suspension components from Ohlins and braking hardware from Brembo (as seen on the concept bike) won’t be making its way onto the production bike.
While Aprilia hasn’t divulged any details regarding the production timeline of the concept machine, it’s likely that the production-spec RS 660 will come into production form as early as next year. Once in production, the model will compete against the new Honda CBR650R and the Kawasaki Ninja 650.
