Bike, scooter sales December 2022: Honda reports 34 percent decline

Barring Honda and Royal Enfield, all other brands reported a month-on-month increase in sales.

Sales figures for the six heavyweights in the Indian two-wheeler industry for the final month of 2022 have been revealed and here’s how each manufacturer fared.

Hero MotoCorp: 3,94,179 units

Market leader Hero MotoCorp continues to lead the way with sales of 3,94,179 units in December 2022, an increase of 3.9 percent over its November sales numbers. Compared to December 2021, where it managed to sell 3,94,773 units, it reported a marginal decline of 0.15 percent. Hero launched the Xpulse 200T 4V in the final month of 2022, and is the second model to feature the company’s 200cc 4-valve engine, after the Xpulse 200 4V.

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI): 2,33,151 units

HMSI was one of two manufacturers that reported a substantial 34 percent decline in its month-on-month sales figures. This marks a sharp departure for the Japanese manufacturer who, in recent times, has been slowly catching up to market leader Hero MotoCorp. In fact, in December 2022, its margin over the next manufacturer, TVS, was just 6,000 units, while in other months it has been over 1.5 lakh units. HMSI registered a growth of 10.6 percent year-on-year, compared to its sales figure of 2,10,638 units in December 2021. TVS Motor Company: 2,27,666 units

TVS, which sold 2,27,666 units in December 2022, reported a substantial increase of 18.7 percent over its figure for November 2022, which stood at 1,91,730 units. Compared to the sales figure for December 2021, which stood at 2,01,233 units, the Hosur-based manufacturer recorded an increase of 13.1 percent. Bajaj Auto: 1,25,525 units

Bajaj bettered its November 2022 sales tally of 1,23,490 units by 1.6 percent, selling 1,25,525 units in December 2022. However, the Pune-based bikemaker reported a decline of 1.6 percent, compared to the 1,27,593 units sold in December 2021. Bajaj recently launched the all-new Pulsar P150 and the Platina 110 ABS in India. 

Royal Enfield: 59,821 units

 

Selling 59,821 units, Royal Enfield reported a decrease of 9 percent over its November 2022 sales figure of 65,760 units. RE also reported an 8.2 percent decline year-on-year, and was not able to match the 65,187 units it sold in December 2021. Recently, Royal Enfield inaugurated its fourth CKD assembly plant overseas, in Brazil, and its parent company, Eicher Motors, has invested in electric bikemaker Stark Future SL.

Suzuki Motorcycle India Private Limited (SIMPL): 40,905 units

With sales of 40,905 units in December, SIMPL wasn't able to better its November 2022 tally of 63,156 units and reported a decline of 35.2 percent. Compared to its December 2021 sales figure of 42,609 units, Suzuki posted a decrease of 4 percent. Suzuki recently launched the Burgman Street EX with a 12-inch rear wheel in India.
