Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250: Design
The Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 is a complete departure from the manufacturer’s traditional cruiser portfolio. Harley-Davidson has injected its own flavour to the conventional ADV design.
Styling bits like the rectangular headlight, chunky 21.2-litre fuel tank and exposed subframe, are what catch the eye; the Pan America 1250 surely does stand out in the sea of adventure motorcycles.
Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250: Engine
Harley-Davidson has developed a brand new 1,252cc, V-twin engine for the Pan America, dubbed the Revolution Max.
This liquid-cooled engine makes 150hp at 9,000rpm and 128Nm at 6,750rpm. This short stroke engine is poles apart from the company's traditional long stroke engines and also features modern-day bits like a DOHC four-valve head and variable valve timing. The engine is paired to a six-speed gearbox with a slipper clutch.
Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250: Chassis and electronics
The new chassis houses the big V-twin as a stressed member and the front frame, mid-frame and subframe bolt directly to it. The company says that this helps enhance the centre of gravity and handling of the 245kg motorcycle.
The frame is suspended by a fully-adjustable Showa 47mm USD fork and monoshock, with the bike offering 210mm of ground clearance. The ADV runs on 19-inch front and 17-inch rear alloy wheels, shod with Michelin Scorcher Adventure radials.
Braking duties are handled by a new radial monoblock four-piston caliper. The dual front brake rotors are 320mm in diameter, while the single rear-brake rotor is 280mm in diameter.
As is expected of a modern day adventure motorcycle, the Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 is kitted with a comprehensive electronics suite. The list includes cruise control, hill-hold assist, cornering ABS, lean-sensitive traction control, five ride modes and a 6.8-inch touch-sensitive full colour TFT screen.
Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 Special
Besides the standard variant, the Pan America will also be available in the Special variant. It will be kitted with additional bells and whistles. These include adaptive ride height (ARH), which is available as an option. This feature - a segment-first - automatically lowers the suspension by up to 50mm when you come to a stop. In addition, this variant also gets other tech like adaptive headlights and tyre pressure monitoring.
