Just over a month ago, the Honda Activa achieved a cumulative sales figure of one crore in India. While this was a special cause for celebration for the Indian wing of the Japanese manufacturer, the company has gone ahead and reached yet another milestone.
Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Pvt. Ltd reported that it has sold over 10,00,000 Activa scooters over the last five months of FY 2015-2016. This includes all three scooters sold under the Activa brand – the Activa 125, Activa 3G, and the Activa-i.
This makes the Activa brand the biggest seller in the scooter segment currently, contributing to 51 percent of the market share. Activa sales volume has grown 20 times compared to the rest of the two-wheelers in the market since the start of FY 2015. In 2005, Honda had sold the one millionth Activa, four and a half years after its launch. To put it in perspective, the manufacturer achieved the figure in less than half a year since the beginning of this FY.
Keita Muramatsu, president and CEO, HMSI said that the company was excited to have started the festive season with such great news. Honda managed to reactivate the dying scooter segment in the country in 2001. However, this is not enough for them, Muramatsu said. The manufacturer is looking forward to improving its infrastructure in rural India, and tapping into the potential of the market there.
