A few months ago Kawasaki officially unveiled its new W230 retro motorcycle and the bike has now been launched overseas. It shares the same motor as the KLX230 which is set to launch in India.

  1. Launched in the USA
  2. Priced on par with Ninja 500

Kawasaki W230 details

The 2025 Kawasaki W230 has been launched in the USA at a price of $5,599 which puts it slightly higher than the Ninja 500. That’s a rather steep price for what is essentially a simple air cooled motorcycle but it’s not particularly representative of what the bike could cost in India if Kawasaki plans to launch it here.

The new Kawasaki W230 runs a version of the 233cc air-cooled engine that’s also being used in the KLX230 dual-sport bike which will launch in India very soon. Kawasaki has localised the KLX to keep the price competitive in India and that boosts the chances of a localised W230 making it to our market as well. Moreover, Kawasaki has already been selling a locally manufactured W175 in our market for a few years, although that bike appears to be quite different from the new 230.

The W230 retains Kawasaki’s clean and classic retro design theme that comes down from the larger W800. The classic theme can be seen in the circular LED headlight, dual analogue gauges with a digital display, and chrome detailing on multiple elements across the bike.

The engine cases also have a rounded retro theme that looks very different from the KLX230, but the internal bore and stroke dimensions on the engine are the same 67x66mm. The USA website does not mention power figures but the KLX’s 17.89Nm is slightly lower than the 18.98Nm torque figure on the W230.

The W230 will be an easy bike to get along with thanks to a low 745mm seat height and a 143kg kerb weight. That makes it nearly 40 kilos lighter than the likes of the Royal Enfield Hunter 350 and it will have a similar power figure of around 20hp.

There is no clarity yet on whether Kawasaki India plans to localise this bike for our market and there are two ways to consider the possibilities. On the one hand, it has the potential to be a success for the company as (unlike the W175) it offers enough power to be a serious rival to the Royal Enfields If Kawasaki were to invest in a localised W230 it could also have a similar price point to the Hunter 350.

However, on the other hand, the W175 has been a failure for Kawasaki after making considerable investments into localisation. With that in mind, the company may be unwilling to pour further investment into another similar project.
