With the odd-even scheme set to be re-implemented in Delhi from November 4-15, popular ride-hailing service provider – Uber – has filed a request with the Delhi government to deploy two-wheeler taxis in the region for the duration of the scheme.
According to the submission made to the Delhi government, Uber has proposed deploying 5,000 motorcycles in Delhi to improve the last-mile connectivity, to and from the metro stations during the 12 days the scheme will be implemented. The company has proposed to offer this service at a cost of Rs 5 per ride and it has even offered to re-deploy 2,500 motorcycles from its UberEats food delivery service, to ply as bike taxis.
A quick recap of what the odd-even scheme exactly is: it essentially allows cars with plates ending in odd or even numbers to ply on alternate days. Those caught not complying with the scheme will be fined up to Rs 2,000. In the past, female drivers and two-wheelers have been exempt from this scheme, which is being implemented in order to control air pollution in the city.
As things currently stand, the regulations in Delhi do not allow the operation of two-wheeler taxis. However, no official decision has been taken by the Delhi government with regards to this proposal as of now.
