Patents reveal important information about the upcoming production version of the Yamaha E01 electric scooter.

  • Maxi-scooter like ergonomics and design

  • The battery pack is situated between the rider’s feet

  • Could rival the upcoming BMW CE 04 electric scooter

Yamaha revealed the E01 electric scooter concept at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. The company revealed that it is a sporty looking urban commuter model with a power output comparable to a 125cc scooter engine. Yamaha also said that it “provides plenty of range and comfort.”

Yamaha E01: design

Earlier this year, Yamaha also filed a trademark application for the E01 name. What’s more interesting, however, is how production ready the scooter appears in the patents. Like with almost every production model, it’s not as aggressively styled as the concept. However, the smooth flowing design, large headlight and floating rear end does appear like it’s based on the concept. Small components like the mirrors, tyre hugger and mandatory reflectors reveal that the scooter in the patent images could be the final product.

Yamaha has also opted to position the battery between the rider’s legs, which means it won’t have a flat floorboard like a conventional scooter. Another upcoming electric scooter that features similar styling and misses out a flat floorboard is the BMW Motorrad Definition CE 04. The motor sits right behind the battery, while the charging port appears to be situated above the headlight at the front. The patents also reveal that the E01 will use disc brakes at both ends and a conventional fork up front. Yamaha is also expected to equip this scooter with all-LED lighting and fully-digital dash.

While there’s no word on the official launch, the production ready nature of the patents hint that it might not be too far away.
