  • Based on the Yamaha FZ-Fi

2021 Yamaha FZ-X: New design

A few months ago, Yamaha registered the name FZ-X. Now, a motorcycle has been spotted in close to production-ready form, giving us an idea of what to expect. It seems like the Yamaha FZ-X will get a retro design theme with a circular LED headlight, headlight bracket and fork gaiters. The FZ-X will get a teardrop shaped fuel tank that looks markedly different to the ones on the other FZs in the lineup. The fuel tank will be flanked by radiator shrouds, even though the air-cooled FZ has no radiator. The riding position is expected to be upright riding and perhaps even more relaxed than on the FZs.

2021 Yamaha FZ-X: Engine and chassis

When it comes to the engine and chassis, a leaked specification sheet reveals that the Yamaha FZ-X will use the engine from the 149cc FZS-FI platform that makes 12.4hp at 7,250rpm. The bike also has an identical wheelbase at 1,330mm. However, there are differences in the dimensions of the Yamaha FZ-X and the FZ-Fi series. The FZ-X is 2,020mm x 785mm x 1,115mm, while the FZS-FI measures 1,990mm x 780mm x 1,080mm. The difference in dimensions is expected, considering that the FZ-X gets different bodywork.

Yamaha’s plans for India

There were plenty of expectations that Yamaha was going to introduce the XSR 155 in India. While the XSR exists abroad, Yamaha India believes in developing products that it believes our customers want. Case in point is the Yamaha FZ range as well as the MT-15 and YZF-R15 that are on sale in India. For instance, both the R15 and the MT-15 get several cost saving measures for our market compared with the bikes sold in overseas markets like Indonesia. Going by the amount of interest in the XSR 155 that has been around for quite a while it appears that Yamaha's solution is to build something unique for India once again.

2021 Yamaha FZ-X: India launch

The Yamaha FZ-X is expected to go on sale around June 2021, however, the current COVID-19 situation in India may have an impact on the timeline. Stay tuned for more.
