2018 EICMA: Yamaha YZF-R3 GYTR race bike showcased

A little less than a month ago, Yamaha had unveiled the 2019 Yamaha YZF-R3, which came with cosmetic updates, improved mechanicals and better cycle parts. And recently, at EICMA 2018, the Japanese manufacturer took to the stage to showcase the R3 GYTR, a race bike based on the new R3.

The bike is produced as part of GYTR or Genuine Yamaha Technology Racing and is equipped with components that make the bike race-ready. The R3 GYTR is equipped with what appears to be a lightweight race fairing that deletes the headlights. Other equipment like the turn indicators, rear mudguard, and tail-light has been removed as well. Bodywork towards the rear is also new; the rear seat is now gone and in its place is a bum stop. The seat cushion has also been replaced by a thin layer of foam to save weight.

The R3 also gets engine crash protection by GB Racing, rides on fully-adjustable Ohlins suspension at the front and rear, gets brakes from Brembo, and an Akrapovic exhaust system. One can also expect the race bike to be tuned differently to perform better on track.

Yamaha has said that this motorcycle will comply with 2019 World Supersport 300 championship FIM regulations. It will take on the likes of the Honda CBR500R, Kawasaki Ninja 300 (EX300ADF) and KTM RC390 in the championship.
