Toyota has released studio shots of the third-generation Toyota Century ahead of its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show. What makes this car really interesting is that it has received only minor updates over the decades and will finally be completely overhauled.

While Toyota’s flagship sedan will maintain its classic exterior design, everything else has been reworked including its dimensions. The luxury sedan is now longer by 64mm making it a lengthy 5.3 metres. A 25mm increase in height will add more space on the inside, making it close to 1.5 metres in total. Also on the list of changes is its engine – it is now a 5.0-litre V8 mated to a hybrid system from the Lexus LC 500 and F-Series. The original Toyota Century was powered by a bespoke V12 built by the Japanese manufacturer.

The interior now has a raised roof that will make being driven around in it a bit more comfortable. Talking about comfort, the Century has power leg rest and power rear seats with a built-in massage function. Furthermore, a touchscreen unit in the armrest lets the passengers control the seat adjustment, air-conditioning and a 20-speaker sound system. Adding to its unique character is the standard 100 percent wool interior, though if wool is not to your taste, the car can be optioned with leather instead. The luxury sedan manages to combine classic features like a writing table and reading light with a modern entertainment system at the rear.

The luxury barge will feature a stiffer body, new engine mounts and reworked suspension. For those concerned about what Toyota has done to reduce noise and vibrations, they have added an active noise cancellation system and specially developed tyres for its new Century. The sedan also comes equipped with a host of safety features like blind spot monitoring, collision avoidance and rear cross-traffic alerts.

The 2018 Toyota Century will be on display at the Japanese manufacturer’s booth at the Tokyo Motor Show that starts October 25, 2017.
