Lamborghini has revealed the new Aventador S Coupé as a more potent and agile flagship set to launch internationally next year. Here’s everything you need to know about it:
Engine and gearbox
The supercar retains the outgoing Aventador’s 6.5-litre V12. However, the engine has been tuned to produce 740hp – which is 41hp more than before – and 690Nm of torque. It can accelerate from 0-100kph in 2.9sec and has a top speed of 349kph. To achieve these gains, Lamborghini has adjusted the naturally aspirated engine’s variable valve timing and intake system, while raising maximum engine revs from 8,350rpm to 8,500rpm.
The engine drives all four wheels via Lamborghini’s Independent Shifting Rod seven-speed gearbox. At 1,575kg, the car weighs the same as the outgoing model, but improves its power-to-weight ratio to 469hp/ton.
Design
With a new, more aggressive, front bumper that’s been designed to work the air harder – the Aventador S produces 130 percent more downforce on its nose. At the back, a rear wing that can be moved into three positions increases downforce by up to 50 percent, while reducing drag by 400 percent in its slipperiest setting.
Chassis
The Aventador S is built around the same carbon-fibre monocoque chassis as before, but it now makes use of a new four-wheel steering system. The system is said to improve agility and high-speed stability, while also improving low speed manoeuvrability.
Updated pushrod and suspension settings are claimed to offer quicker response rates. The car’s real-time variable damping system and rear springs have also been adjusted for the rear-wheel steering.
Additionally, it’s electronic stability control system features updated software that’s claimed to react faster, and Lamborghini has retuned the car’s all-wheel-drive system to enable up to 90 percent of the engine’s torque to be sent rearwards. The results, it says, makes for a more agile car that allows for more oversteer if the driver so wants it.
Technology
Lamborghini has added a new Ego setting to the existing three driving modes - Strada (Street), Sport and Corsa (race). This customisable mode enables drivers to individually tweak the car’s drivetrain and suspension settings.
The cabin also gains a new TFT touchscreen with Apple CarPlay included as standard.
