British sportscar maker Aston Martin will build its upcoming DBX crossover at a new factory located in St Athan, South Wales. The new factory is part of a £200m (approx. Rs 2,000 crore) investment in new products and facilities by the British manufacturer.
Occupying around 90 acres, construction for the new facility is slated to commence in 2017. The plant is expected to be fully functional by 2020, which is by when Aston Martin pledges to renew its entire product line-up.
While the facility at Wales will cater to the production of the DBX, Aston’s manufacturing base at Gaydon in Warwickshire will focus on producing its next-generation sportscars, including the Aston Martin DB11 and recently announced all-electric Aston Martin RapidE.
For the DBX, Aston Martin CEO, Andrew Charles Palmer said: “We showed the concept a year ago, and we’re now in the design phase, working on the dimensions of the production car.”
The DBX is based on a new aluminium-bonded structure that will underpin the next generation of Aston Martin sportscars, and will be a 4x4 model. According to Palmer, the new Welsh facility could also produce Lagonda models, in addition to the production version of the DBX crossover.
