Having introduced a new mild-hybird diesel engine on its S6 and S7 earlier this month, Audi is now set to offer the same motor on the smaller S5. In some markets, this new 350hp mild-hybird diesel motor will replace the the turbocharged V6 petrol engine.
The engine, which will be available in the S5 Coupe and S5 Sportback, is the same 3.0-litre TDI V6 diesel with a 48V mild-hybrid system and electrically-powered compressor, which produces 350hp and 700Nm of torque.
The diesel engine allows the S5 Coupe to achieve 0-100kph in 4.8secs, while the five-door Sportback is 0.1secs slower. Both models are electronically limited to 250kph.
Compared to the S5 petrol, the diesel S5 is around 4hp down in terms of power though torque is up by about 200Nm. Audi also claims the new unit consumes 19 percent less fuel than the previous petrol version.
As with the petrol model, the diesel S5 will be offered with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, along with permanent all-wheel-drive and a self-locking centre differential.
The 3.0-litre TFSI petrol engine will continue to be offered in the S5 in some markets outside of Europe, like India. The India-spec Audi S5 Sportback, which retails at Rs 72.43 lakh (ex-showroom, India), is powered by the 354hp/500Nm, 2995cc V6 turbo-petrol motor.
