BMW has just launched the performance-focused version of the M5 sedan – the sporty iteration of the 5 Series – called the M5 Competition. The German carmaker brought the M5 Competition via the CBU route, with prices starting from Rs 1.55 crore (ex-showroom, pan-India). The new model is available at BMW dealerships across India and effectively replaces the standard M5 in BMW India's line-up.

Design-wise, the M5 Competition sports a number of M-specific changes over the standard sedan, including gloss-black accents on the kidney grille, ORVMs, side air vents, rear diffuser and spoiler. M-specific twin exhaust and M5 Competition badging are also part of the package. It also gets a more aggressive side-skirt, front bumper and rear bumper, along with a high-strength carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof which is specific to the Competition model.

Power for the M5 Competition comes from a V8, twin-turbocharged petrol engine which produces 625hp (25hp more than the standard M5 on sale in India at Rs 1.43 crore) and 750Nm of torque. The engine is paired to an 8-speed automatic gearbox and the M5 Competition puts down power through all four wheels using BMW’s M xDrive all-wheel-drive system. BMW claim that the M5 Competition can do the 0-100kph sprint in just 3.3sec (0.1sec quicker than the standard M5). The M xDrive system provides various modes – 4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD – with the latter completely disengaging the all-wheel drive and making the performance sedan rear-wheel drive.

Coming to the interiors, this model features more M-specific tweaks like multi-function sport seats, seat belts, leather multi-function steering wheel, red start/stop button and pedals. Other equipment on the also includes wireless charging, the BMW head-up display (HUD), wireless Apple CarPlay support, a 600W 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch infotainment system.

In our market, the BMW M5 competes with the Mercedes-AMG E63 S 4MATIC+ performance sedan.
