BS-IV norms to be implemented nationwide by April 2017

Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issues notification to implement norm in seven states from October 2015; more states from April 2016.

A notification issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, states that the Central Government will be making the Bharat Stage-IV (BS-IV) emission norms applicable to all vehicles being sold and registered in seven states from October 1, 2015. The government also plans to make the emission norms applicable nationwide by April 2017.

Currently, the BS-IV norms are implemented in certain Tier-1 cities along with all metro cities. BS-IV grade fuel was first made available in the NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmadabad, Bangalore, Hyderabad including Secunderabad, Kanpur, Pune, Surat, Agra, Lucknow and Sholapur from April 1, 2010. It was further extended to 20 more cities in October 2014, and then to 30 from  April 1, 2015.

The states to be added from October 1, 2015,  include Jammu and Kashmir – except Kargil and Leh districts, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttrakhand, and certain districts in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

Furthermore, the government plans to implement the emission norms in the states of Goa, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, Odisha and the Union territories of Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Andaman and Nicobar Islands, districts of Mumbai, Thane and Pune in Maharashtra and districts of Surat, Valsad, Dang and Tapi in Gujarat.

Once the emission standards come into effect, only vehicles compliant with BS-IV regulations will be sold and registered in the mentioned states.
