Mercedes-Benz has launched the BS6-compliant E-class long wheelbase in India with prices ranging from Rs 57.5 lakh for the base petrol and going up to Rs 62.5 lakh for the top-end diesel.
The biggest change in the update is to the engine line-up. The 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines from the E 200 and E 220d respectively now meet BS6 emission regulations. Interestingly, while the 2.0-litre diesel continues to develop an identical 194hp and 400Nm of torque, the petrol motor now develops 197hp (up by 13hp); although its torque remains unchanged at 300Nm. Both units are paired with a 9-speed automatic gearbox as standard.
The larger V6 diesel-powered E 350d has not been upgraded to meet the new emission norms.
The BS6-compliant Mercedes E-class LWB is available in a choice of two trim levels – Expression and Exclusive. The trims can be had with either engine option.
In terms of equipment, the top E-class Exclusive packs in a host of new tech, including wireless charging for rear passengers, a touchscreen in the rear-centre armrest to control in-car functions and a 13-speaker Burmester surround sound system that was earlier available only on the top-spec E 350d variant.
Also new to the E-class in India are the twin 12.3-inch displays that act as the instrument cluster and infotainment display – Exclusive trim only. The E-class previously featured an analogue instrument cluster with a single 12.3-inch display acting as the display for Mercedes' Comand infotainment system on all non-AMG models.
On the safety front, the E-class continues to be offered with a host of safety systems including seven airbags, ABS, ESP and the brand’s Pre-Safe system.
The E-class continues to rival the likes of the Audi A6 and the BMW 5 Series and 6 Series GT.
