A few days ago, Datsun revealed certain design elements of the refreshed Redigo hatchback via some teaser images. Leaked images that have surfaced online today show the updated Redigo in its entirety. What the latest set of images make clear is that the changes to Datsun’s budget hatchback are quite comprehensive.
To start with, the updated Redigo gets some significant styling changes up front. There’s a pair of sharper and slimmer headlamps that visually link the hatchback to Nissan’s Kicks SUV. The refreshed Redigo sports Datsun’s signature octagonal front grill but a thick chrome surround makes it appear bolder now. The front bumper gets some styling tweaks too, but what’s prominent are the new, large L-shaped DRLs, which stand-out compared to the tiny optional ones on the outgoing version. Segment-first LED fog lamps are another new inclusion while silver Datsun name plaques on the fenders are new too.
New two-tone wheel covers that resemble alloys wheels add much to the Redigo’s look. The new outside mirrors are also a welcome change - they not only look nicer than the flimsy mirrors on the old car but also get internal adjustment. At the rear, the new LED elements inside the tail-lamps appear to be the only change. The spoiler as well as the roof rails seen in the leaked photo appear to be part of the accessory package. The Datsun Redigo’s colour template will comprise six options including two new shades – brown and blue. Datsun has also updated the Redigo’s body structure to comply with the latest safety norms.
The Redigo’s interior looks to have taken a giant leap forward as well. New grey and silver inserts make the cabin appear a lot more upmarket. However, what really takes centre stage is the new 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which features Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility as well as voice commands. In addition, the seats get a new two-tone fabric, and the door pads now feature new fabric trim. Other additions include a passenger-side airbag (in addition to the driver’s), retractable rear seat belts (in place of the original Redigo’s static reel ones) and a reversing camera.
As far as the engines go, the updated Redigo will be available with BS6 versions of the 0.8-litre and 1.0-litre petrol engines with a 5-speed manual as standard - the latter unit will also be available with an automated manual transmission (AMT). There will be four variants for the Redigo 0.8L – D, A, T and T (O) - while the 1.0L will be available only in the T(O).
The facelifted Datsun Redigo 0.8L will compete against the Maruti Alto that’s priced between Rs 2.95 and Rs 3.90 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Although the Alto doesn’t get an AMT option, it does have a CNG version priced between Rs 4.33 and 4.36 lakh. The Redigo also competes with its cousin from Renault, the Kwid, that is priced between Rs 2.92-4.22 lakh for the 0.8L, Rs 4.42-4.50 lakh for the 1.0L manual and Rs 4.72-4.80 lakh for the 1.0L-AMT version. Higher variants of the Redigo will also compete with the Maruti S-Presso that’s priced between Rs 3.71-4.56 lakh for the 1.0L petrol MT and Rs 4.76- 4.99 lakh for the 1.0L petrol-AMT variants. Prices and the certified fuel efficiency figures for the updated Redigo are likely to be revealed soon.
