Diesel prices in Mumbai have breached the Rs 100 mark today – a day after petrol in Delhi crossed the Rs 100 mark.

In Mumbai today, petrol and diesel are priced at Rs 115.88 and Rs 100.10 per litre. Meanwhile in Delhi, after a hike of Rs 80 paise on both petrol and diesel, the prices today are Rs 101.01 and Rs 92.27 per litre, respectively.

This is the ninth hike in the last 10 days, taking the total price increase to Rs 5.60 a litre, after a four-month hiatus on the hike in fuel prices. As India imports nearly 85 percent of its energy needs, a slight fluctuation in the prices internationally would have an impact here too.

Globally, fuel prices increased marginally – by 1 percent. The prices have been fluctuating for some time, and while it was on a brief decline, it has started rising again.

Maharashtra cuts VAT on CNG

In a welcome move, the Maharashtra government last week slashed the VAT on CNG from 13.5 percent to 3 percent. This has brought down the price to Rs 58 per kg – reducing by Rs 8. The new prices will go into effect from April 1.
