Ford Capri: what exactly will it be?

The revived Capri will ditch its predecessor's sports car body style for a sporty SUV one, and be based on the born-EV Volkswagen MEB platform. That mean the SUV will share its underpinnings with the Volkswagen ID.4 and the Ford Explorer EV. This new EV from Ford will be primarily aimed at the European market.

The Explorer EV – not to be mistaken with the standard Ford Explorer sold in North America – is built at Ford's new Electric Vehicle Centre in Cologne, Germany. The facility is Ford's first dedicated EV manufacturing plant in Europe and the company has confirmed that a second EV, the Capri, will go into production there later this year. While the Capri name has not been officially confirmed but the nameplate being used has been widely reported, according to Autocar UK.

Ford Capri: design, powertrain, range highlights

The upcoming Ford Capri will have a crossover-ish look, with a coupe-like roofline replete with unique design cues that will give it a different identity from the Explorer EV. It will have LED light signatures mimicking the styling of earlier Capri models, according to sources.

Underneath, it's expected to be technically identical to the Explorer EV with a choice of three powertrains, ranging in output from 170hp to 340hp, and either a 52kWh or a 77kWh battery pack for a maximum range of around 600km. Charging will be at speeds of up to 170kW.
