Google Maps has launched Street View in India, and has used the Mahindra Bolero Neo, Marazzo and older-gen Scorpios for mapping streets. Alphabet partnered with Genesys International – a company which specialises in geospatial services and mapping – and Tech Mahindra. This marks the first time globally that the tech giant has taken the help of local partners to collect data for Street View.

  • Mahindra Scorpio, Marazzo, Bolero Neo used to map streets
  • Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi among cities supporting Street View

Google Street View was to launch here in 2011, but the Indian government refused to grant permission over security regulations. Street View is currently available in Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, Nashik, Vadodara, Ahmednagar and Amritsar, and the company sys it plans to roll it out to 50 cities by the end of 2022.

The Marazzo was one of the cars that Mahindra used for mapping the streets.

Google has managed to do this by using 360-degree panoramic images, and has covered over 1,50,000km on Indian streets.

Google Street View's launch coincides with that of MapmyIndia's Mappls RealView, which too provides 3D views of highways, roads, tourist landmarks, residential societies, office towers and complexes.

How to use Street View

Street View can be accessed using on desktop, as well as on the phone – both iOS and Android. On iOS devices, one has to open the Google Maps app, click on the drop down menu and select Street View to access the feature, while on Android, the feature is available on the homescreen of the app itself.

If you want to access it on the desktop, you can do so by selecting the street view on the bottom right corner of the screen. What's different on the mobile app though is that it splits the screen and offers the Street View on one side, and the regular map on the other. On the desktop and mobile though, you can move forward by double tapping the screen and moving in the direction of the click.
