Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) has issued a voluntary recall for the 2013 model year Accord, City and Jazz. 22,834 examples in total fall under this recall which will see Honda replace the faulty Takata airbag inflators. The City forms a majority of that figure (22,084 units), with 510 units of the Accord and 240 examples of the Jazz also being covered by this campaign.

This is part of a larger, global recall campaign, which affected up to 100 million cars from at least 13 manufacturers after it was found that the airbag inflators expanded with too much force and sprayed metal shrapnel into cars. At least 12 deaths and 180 injuries have been attributed to this fault, for which Takata has agreed to pay $1 billion (Rs 6,800 crore) in penalties.

Starting today, Honda will contact affected customers, directly and carry out the replacement, free of cost. Customers can check if their car has been recalled by entering their 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number on the company's micro site.
