Honda is set to equip the Civic Type R and the Si with its new turbocharged 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engines, according to details that have surfaced online. Preliminary images of the engine reveal that it will likely benefit from an electric wastegate actuator and a built-in blow-off valve for the turbochargers, which help make the engine more responsive.

The Civic Si will get a detuned version of the motor, producing roughly 230bhp, and will be exclusively paired to a six-speed manual transmission. A more powerful version of the same engine is likely to make its way into the range-topping Civic Type R.

While the Civic Si will go on sale sometime around early 2017 internationally, the Civic Type R will roll out later in 2017. The Type R variant will be available in almost all markets that offer the standard Civic.

But before the launch of these models, Honda intends to sell the tenth-generation Civic Sedan and Coupe in the US market with a 158bhp, 2.0-litre petrol engine. Also on offer will be a more powerful turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine, producing 174bhp.

A Europe-specific Civic five-door hatchback is set to go on sale in early 2017. This version of the Civic will be powered by a turbocharged, 1.0-litre, three-cylinder engine that will produce around 127bhp.
