Hyundai has silently introduced a CNG version of its popular Grand i10 hatchback in the mid-spec Magna trim. Priced at Rs 6.39 lakh in Delhi and Rs 6.41 lakh in Mumbai (ex-showroom), the addition of the factory-fitted CNG kit translates into a premium of Rs 67,000 over the equivalent petrol variant. The option of CNG was earlier available only on the Grand i10 Prime for fleet operators, but now the Korean automaker has extended the option to private buyers too.
Seeing that the higher-spec Sportz and Asta variants have been given a miss, the CNG offering loses out on quite a few convenience features. Still, it gets a decently long equipment list including roof rails, remote locking, Bluetooth audio system with steering mounted controls, rear AC vents and a power outlet, all-four power windows and electrically adjustable ORVMs. Standard safety features like dual front airbags, ABS and EBD are part of the package too.
The Hyundai Grand i10 CNG gets a four-cylinder, 1.2-litre engine that puts out 82hp/110Nm on petrol and 66hp/98Nm on CNG. A 5-speed manual gearbox handles transmission duties.
After the Santro, the Grand i10 is the second car in Hyundai’s range to get a CNG avatar, specifically for private owners. This gives the mid-size hatchback a leg up compared to rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Swift and Ford Figo, which are available with petrol and diesel engine options only. The update should also let the Hyundai offering hold its own till it is replaced by the next-generation Grand i10 later this year. Moreover, the Korean carmaker is gearing up for the launch of its first compact SUV, the Venue on May 21, 2019.
