Hyundai has unveiled the Ioniq 6 electric sedan, which is the third addition to the firm's Ioniq EV family – the retro-styled Hyundai Ioniq 5 crossover and the Ioniq hatchback were the first two in the line-up. The sedan was previewed by the sleek and ultra-low Prophecy concept in 2020.

  • Based on the eGMP platform
  • Production version of the Prophecy concept
  • Expected to offer over 482Km of range

Hyundai Ioniq 6: exterior and interior

The Ioniq 6 continues with Hyundai’s ‘Sensuous Sportiness’ design language that’s seen on its other products.Unlike the Ioniq 5, the 6 features a more aerodynamically-focussed ‘single-curve’ silhouette, which, Hyundai claims, helps to optimise efficiency thanks to a drag coefficient of 0.21.

The sides of the EV feature flush door handles and cameras in place of traditional wing mirrors. Towards the rear, the electric sedan gets pixel-style LED tail-lights, a ducktail rear spoiler and a curved shoulder line, similar to the concept.

Measuring 4,855mm in length, 1,880mm in width, 1,495mm in height and with a wheelbase of 2,950mm, the Ioniq 6 is a close match in size to the Tesla Model 3Polestar 2 and BMW i4

On the inside, the Ioniq 6 features a flat centre console that’s seen on other EV products by the brand and the Genesis GV60 sold overseas. The minimalist dashboard houses a pair of dual 12-inch touchscreens and a two-spoke steering wheel.

Hyundai Ioniq 6: expected powertrain and range

The Ioniq 6 uses the brand’s E-GMP skateboard architecture, which also underpins the Kia EV6. Hyundai has yet to reveal the EV’s complete technical details, but it's expected to get the same 800V hardware as standard that allows for up to 350kW of fast charging.

The Ioniq 6 is also expected to be offered with a choice of batteries ranging from 58kWh to 77.4kWh in capacity, with the former providing an expected range of over 482 Km.

The firm also offers two powertrain configurations – single motor with rear-wheel-drive and dual motor with four-wheel-drive. A 229hp, RWD entry-level model, 325hp, mid-rung 4WD option and a range-topping 585hp, Ioniq 6 ‘N’ are on the cards – the ‘N’ with a claimed sub-3.5sec 0-100kph time.

Hyundai’s EV plans for India

Hyundai is gearing up to launch the Kona Electric facelift in India soon, and you can read about it here. In May 2022, the brand announced that it will locally assemble the Ioniq 5 in order to bring down the costs. This move will allow Hyundai to upstage its sister brand Kia, which recently launched the EV6 via the CBU route at a starting price of Rs 59.95 lakh (ex-showroom, India).
