Hyundai is set to have a major presence at the upcoming Auto Expo which starts from January 11. The carmaker will have a host of existing and new model showcases along with some concept cars. The Ioniq 5 EV crossover, which was recently showcased in India, will be launched at the Auto Expo, with the Ioniq 6 EV sedan being another attraction. Additionally, the brand could also showcase a concept previewing its future sub-compact SUV that will go on sale in the second-half of 2023.

Hyundai targeting a sub Rs 50-lakh price for the Ioniq 5

Hyundai will launch the much awaited Ioniq 5 EV crossover at the Auto Expo 2023. The carmaker had showcased the model in December, and opened bookings for Rs 1 lakh. The Ioniq 5 is a cousin model to Kia's EV6 that's already on sale here, but, unlike the Kia, the Hyundai will be locally assembled. It is one of the main reasons why Hyundai will be able to price the Ioniq 5 lower than the Kia EV6's Rs 59.96 lakh price tag – it is targeting a sub-Rs 50 lakh price tag for the model.

The Ioniq 5 will be available only in a single-motor, rear-wheel drive set-up, with its electric motor producing 217hp and 350Nm of torque. The motor will draw power from a 72.6kWh battery pack and have an ARAI-certified range of 631km on a single charge. The Ioniq 5 supports superfast 800V charging, which can charge the battery from 10 percent to 80 percent in 18 minutes.

The Ioniq 5 was first previewed as the 45 EV concept at the 2019 Frankfurt motor show, and the final production model looks very similar to the retro-futuristic design language of the concept. It won the 2022 World Car of the Year award, as well as the World Design of the Year and World Electric Car of the Year awards.

Hyundai Ioniq 6 is a Tesla Model 3 rival

We had confirmed that Hyundai will showcase the Ioniq 6 EV sedan at the Auto Expo, which would make it the third EV offering globally after the Kona EV and the Ioniq 5. The design of the EV sedan is closely related to the Prophecy concept, which was also showcased at the previous Auto Expo. The Ioniq 6 uses the Hyundai group’s e-GMP skateboard architecture which also underpins the Kia EV6 and the Ioniq 5.

The Ioniq 6, which is a full-size sedan, gets a distinct swooping design with multiple creases, and the brand claims that with all its design elements, it has a drag co-efficient of just 0.21Cd. Speaking of dimensions, it closely matches to the Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2 and the BMW i4, in size, which is also sold here.

The Ioniq 6 comes with two battery size options – the entry-level 53kWh and the larger 77kWh (also available on the Ioniq 5). The single motor RWD set-up is standard across the range, with the higher variants getting a dual motor AWD option as well. The Ioniq 6 dual motor makes 320hp and 605Nm, which is the same as the Ioniq 5, while the RWD set-up churns out 228hp and 350Nm. In terms of WLTP-certified range, the Ioniq 6 does 429km for the RWD 53kWh version, 614km for the RWD with the 77.4kWh battery, while the AWD version does 583km.

Hyundai Nexo FCEV will be showcased again

Hyundai will also showcase the Nexo fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) SUV at the event. This is the third time Hyundai will be showcasing the model in India, having previously shown it in 2018 and 2020. Positioned as a midsize SUV, the Nexo is powered by a fuel cell stack. Chemical reactions within each cell between the hydrogen (stored on board in three tanks) and oxygen from the atmosphere generate electricity that is used to power the Nexo’s electric motor. The only by-product of this reaction is water.

The Nexo’s three hydrogen tanks have a combined capacity of 156.6 litres, enabling a 666km range in the WLTP cycle. More impressively, it can be topped up in just 5 minutes, unlike EVs, whose batteries take much longer for a full charge. The Nexo is powered by a front-wheel mounted electric motor that makes equivalent of 161hp and 395Nm.

Hyundai at Auto Expo 2023: what else will be on display?

In addition to the aforementioned cars, Hyundai will also have its advanced ADAS features on display, the Hyundai SPOT (Dynamic display),  along with ATLAS, H-MEX, MobED which is Hyundai mobility adventure consisting of Robolox Metaverse.  The brand will also have a full scale model displaying its mobility tech and "Digital car life".
