  • 2.0-litre petrol is the mainstay of the JLR range
  • Only Discovery Sport and Evoque get both petrol and diesel options
  • COVID-19 has delayed rollout of more engine options

If you’re looking for a new Jaguar or Land Rover, you might find your desired engine spec not on offer any more. A quick scroll through JLR’s model listing reveals a dramatically trimmed engine line-up. Only two models – namely the Discovery Sport and Evoque – offer the option of diesel power, with the other models across the two brands available in petrol-only form.

Will JLR’s diesels return?

JLR isn’t turning its back on diesels and has confirmed it'll make a comeback in the coming months. The carmaker had at least one BS6-compliant offering across every product line on April 1, 2020, though a company source says the COVID-19 pandemic has delayed plans to bring out more engine choices.

Expect the BS6 version of Jaguar Land Rover’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel to be offered across more locally assembled models like the Jaguar XF and Range Rover Velar. CBU imports will also be available with a wider range of petrol and diesel engines.

What’s available now and what’s coming?

Along with a trimmed engine line-up, JLR has also rationalised its India range by cutting the number of variants on offer. Here’s a quick look at what’s available at a JLR showroom near you:

Jaguar XE

Jaguar’s sedan got a nip and tuck towards the end of 2019, and it brought in refreshed styling and more equipment. While the facelift was launched with both 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines, only the petrol is on offer at the moment. The 250hp petrol engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission is available in two trim levels – S and SE.

Jaguar XF

With the current-gen XJ going out of production, the XF is now Jaguar’s range-topping sedan. The MY2020 (model year 2020) XF is available in 250hp petrol form solely in the mid-spec Prestige variant. A diesel version powered by JLR’s 180hp, 2.0-litre diesel unit is on the cards.

Jaguar F-Pace

Jaguar’s assembled-in-India SUV gets a 250hp, 2.0-litre petrol engine and it can be had in the Prestige trim. Expect the 180hp version of JLR’s BS6 2.0-litre diesel to be introduced soon.

Jaguar F-Type

Jaguar revealed prices of the F-Type facelift during the nationwide lockdown last month. While the rest of the range might have to be content with downsized engines for now, the F-Type, being the company’s halo offering, comes with the complete arsenal, and that includes the full-blooded 5.0-litre supercharged V8. There is also a (relatively) affordable 2.0-litre unit on offer.

PriceRs 95.12 lakh-2.42 crore

Land Rover Discovery Sport

The new Discovery Sport went on sale last year with just a diesel engine but petrol versions have since been added to the line-up. The 2.0-litre petrol variants get 48V mild-hybrid tech and are priced at Rs 59.98-63.32 lakh. Interestingly, prices for the 2.0-litre diesel trims have been hiked by Rs 1.22-2.85 lakh and are now at Rs 59.91-62.11 lakh.

Land Rover Discovery

In the switch to MY2020, the large Discovery has shed its 2.0-and 3.0-litre diesel offerings, as well as its potent 3.0-litre supercharged V6 petrol engine. The sole engine on offer at the moment is a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that puts out 300hp and 400Nm of torque. There are no changes in the Discovery variant line-up; it still has four trim levels, with a third row of seats available as an option.

Range Rover Evoque

The second-gen Evoque made its India debut earlier this year. BS6 revisions across JLR’s line-up mean that the baby Range Rover is only the second model in the company’s range to have a diesel engine option for now. There is also a 2.0-litre petrol mill on offer, equipped with a 48V mild hybrid system. The Evoque has seen a mark-up of Rs 1.79-3.73 lakh since its launch, and is currently priced at Rs 58-61.94 lakh.

Range Rover Velar

Launched in 2018 in an incredible 25 versions (engines and trims accounted for), the Velar range was dramatically trimmed to just two versions when local assembly was introduced last year. In 2020, the Velar range solely comprises the zesty 250hp, 2.0-litre engine version. However, the 180hp, 2.0 diesel will rejoin the line-up in the coming months.

Range Rover Sport

The 2019 Range Rover Sport had an extensive variety of powertrains on offer, from 2.0-, 3.0- and 5.0-litre petrols, to 3.0- and 4.4-litre diesels. That spread has been limited to just the smallest capacity petrol mill for now. The exclusion of the more powerful engines also means that the SUV now misses out on some of the features that were exclusive to the range-topping Autobiography Dynamic and SVR trims.

Range Rover

Land Rover’s flagship model's powertrain line-up has gone through an extensive revamp. Gone are the 3.0-litre and 4.4-litre diesels, and the 5.0-litre petrol. The 3.0-litre supercharged V6 petrol engine has now been replaced by an in-line, six-cylinder petrol unit of a similar capacity. To boost performance and efficiency, the new engine packs in a turbocharger, an electric supercharger as well as a 48V mild-hybrid system. Moreover, the sole powertrain is available across the entire line-up, right from the entry-level Vogue to the range-topping SVAutobiography trim.

Land Rover Defender

Land Rover India opened order books and revealed pricing for the iconic SUV earlier this year. The Defender will make it to our market in both the 90 (3-door) and 110 (5-door) versions, with only the 2.0-litre P300 petrol engine to begin with. A diesel option is expected to arrive a few months after. Deliveries will commence in August. Click here to read our review of the Land Rover Defender.
