BMW is celebrating 35 years of its M5 performance sedan with a limited-run reworking of the M5 Competition. The first M5, which was powered by an in-line six-cylinder motor taken from the mid-engined M1 supercar, was launched in international markets in late 1984.

The BMW M5 Edition 35 Years features the same twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 engine as the M5 Competition, which produces 625hp and 750Nm of torque, and can achieve the 0-100kph sprint in 3.3secs, on its way to a limited top speed of 250kph.

The special edition model also features the all-wheel-drive system and the lowered and stiffened suspension from the M5 Competition, along with ball-joined rear suspension mountings and upgraded front anti-roll bars.

Just 350 examples of the M5 Edition 35 Years will be produced, each featuring a number of design changes, including a new metallic grey paint and new 20-inch alloy wheels. The brake callipers are finished in high-gloss black, while those on the optional M carbon ceramic brakes are available in a gold finish.

The cabin of the M5 Edition 35 Years sports a number of trim finishes featuring a gold-anodised carbon structure in the door trim, instrument panel and centre console. The door sills and cupholder covers feature M5 Edition 35 engravings.

There’s no word on BMW bringing this limited-run model to India, where it sells the standard M5 for Rs 1.44 crore (ex-showroom, India). This model is not as performance-oriented as the M5 Edition 35 Years or the M5 Competition as its 4.4-litre V8 makes 25hp less and gets the standard suspension setup.
