The Volkswagen Taigun has just been crash tested by Latin NCAP, and it has come away with a strong 5-star rating. The model tested was made in India for sale in the Latin American markets. The Taigun has also scored 5 stars under Global NCAP previously, but there are certain differences in test procedures between Latin NCAP and Global NCAP. Moreover, the Taigun tested by Latin NCAP came equipped with six airbags as standard, while the one tested by Global NCAP was only equipped with dual airbags.

Volkswagen Taigun Latin NCAP adult occupant protection

The Taigun scored 36.99 points or a commendable 92.47 percent in adult occupant protection in the Latin NCAP crash tests – it was tested for frontal crash protection, side crash protection, side pole impact test as well as whiplash protection under rear impact, the last of which is not rated under Global NCAP.

While most findings are similar between the two crash tests, the driver’s chest protection was rated 'marginal' as compared to 'adequate protection' under Global NCAP. Conversely, the chest protection was rated as good under Latin NCAP, while it was rated 'marginal protection' under Global NCAP in the side crash protection test. It also fared marginally better in the side pole impact test, offering adequate protection to the abdomen region.

For the additional whiplash protection in case of a rear impact, Latin NCAP noted good protection to the adult's neck, with the car also meeting rear impact structural requirements.

Commenting on the results, Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO of Škoda Auto Volkswagen India said, “We’re tremendously proud of the safety track record of our vehicles built on the MQB A0-IN platform. This is a testament to the VW Group’s commitment to offer world-class safety to our customers. Made for and in India but exported across the world, the VW Taigun is an excellent example of what the campaign to #MakeInIndia is capable of.”

Volkswagen Taigun Latin NCAP child occupant protection

For child occupant protection, the India-made Taigun secured 45 points, or 91.84 percent. Again, the findings were very similar to Global NCAP tests, offering full protection to both 18-month-old and 3-year-old children in rearward-facing child seats secured via ISOFIX anchorages. But unlike the India-spec Taigun where the passenger side airbag cannot be disconnected in case a rearward-facing child seat is installed on the front passenger seat, the Latin-spec Taigun gets a switch to manually disconnect the passenger side airbag.

Volkswagen Taigun Latin NCAP safety assist system

Latin NCAP has a few safety assist tests, which are over and above the Global NCAP tests. This includes seatbelt reminders for all five seats whereas under Global NCAP, it's only required for the driver and front passenger seat. The Taigun additionally also underwent the moose test at a maximum speed of 85kph. The Latin-spec Taigun also gets an optional autonomous emergency braking function, for which it secured 7.81 points. Both Latin NCAP and Global NCAP require ESC to be fitted as standard. Overall, the Taigun secured 35.81 points or 83.28 percent in safety assist systems.

The Taigun meets UN 127 pedestrian protection norms under both Latin NCAP and Global NCAP.
