In its latest round of crash tests for made-in-India and sold-in-India cars, Global NCAP has awarded the Mahindra Marazzo a four-star safety rating for adult occupancy. The MPV scored 12.85 out of 17 in adult safety and 22.22 out of 49 in child occupancy (two stars). The test results are valid for all Marazzos made after November 16, 2018. Considering the Mahindra launched the new car at the beginning of September, it remains to be seen if additional modifications were made to the Marazzo after launch.

All variants of the Marazzo get safety kit such as dual front airbags, ABS, a driver’s side seat-belt reminder, front seat-belt pretensioners and Isofix anchorages for the rear seats as standard, which has helped the MPV get this score.

However, the forward-facing child seat, when attached to the Isofix mounts, was not able to prevent excessive forward movement, which could lead to head injuries in children above three years. These factors resulted in the lower two-star score in child safety for the Mahindra MPV.

Global NCAP also discovered that protection for the driver’s chest was less than acceptable and the seatbelt reminder for the front passenger did not meet the crash-test agency’s standards.

While the Marazzo was launched between Rs 9.99-13.90 lakh, Mahindra has confirmed that these prices were introductory and would be hiked in January 2019. The MPV is available in a seven-seat and eight-seat configuration, four trim levels and a 123hp, 1.5-litre diesel engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission.

While it directly takes on the recently launched second-gen Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, the top-spec trim is also a viable rival to the Toyota Innova Crysta.
