Mahindra has launched its new Marazzo MPV with a single engine-gearbox combination, namely a diesel-manual that mates a 1.5-litre diesel to a six-speed manual gearbox. However, Mahindra officials have confirmed there will be more engine-gearbox options to choose from in the time to come.
Dr Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, Mahindra and Mahindra, stated that the company has plans to introduce a petrol engine version of the MPV. However, he did clarify Mahindra will only bring out the petrol version in 2020, once the new emission norms kick in. Bringing out the engine in BS-IV guise and having to upgrade it to meet BS-VI emission standards by 2020 would have been an unduly costly move, he explained. While Mahindra has not made public details of the petrol engine to power the Marazzo, the carmaker is working on a new 1.5-litre petrol engine that is expected be the engine of choice on the MPV. Expect power to be in the region of 120hp like the diesel. Worth noting is that the diesel engine that currently does duty on the Marazzo is BS-IV emission norms compliant but can be updated to meet the upcoming BS-VI norms.
Petrol engine aside, Mahindra will also roll out an automatic transmission on the Marazzo in the future. Other MPVs such as the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Toyota Innova Crysta are already offered with the option of an automatic gearbox.
