Recently, we reviewed the automatic variants of the all-new Mahindra Scorpio N, which is a huge improvement over the outgoing version in every single area. Curiously, Mahindra has only revealed prices of the manual variants. Prices of automatic and 4WD variants will be announced on July 21, and bookings will be opened on July 30. In the meantime, we put the Scorpio N’s automatic variants through our test cycles to find out their real-world fuel efficiency.

What is the real world efficiency of Mahindra Scorpio N?
The version powered by the 203hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine delivered 7.9kpl in the city and 9.4kpl on the highway. The 175hp, 2.2-litre diesel proved to be more efficient in comparison, delivering 8.6kpl and 11.7kpl in the same city and highway cycles, respectively.
Analysis of Mahindra Scorpio N’s fuel efficiency
Mahindra has equipped the petrol-AT iteration with automatic engine stop-start, which cuts down fuel consumption while idling. Keep this feature off and the fuel efficiency will plunge even further, especially in city conditions. This 203hp engine isn’t tuned for efficiency; it is very responsive and delivers strong low and mid-range performance, and even with a light foot on the accelerator, highway efficiency will be in single digits.
The diesel-AT, on the other hand, doesn’t get auto engine stop-start; instead, it has driving modes – Zip, Zap and Zoom – with Zip being equivalent to Economy setting, Zap being the mid, and Zoom being Sports. Our tests were conducted in Zip mode, which marginally dulled the performance in the interest of fuel efficiency.
Autocar India’s fuel efficiency testing
Before our real-world fuel efficiency test, we fill the tanks of our test cars till the brim and maintain tyre pressures based on the manufacturer’s recommendation. These cars are driven in fixed city and highway loops and we maintain certain average speeds. Periodic driver swaps neutralise variations in driver patterns.
At the end of each cycle, we calculate efficiency by tanking them up till the brim. Throughout our test, there is only one person in each car, running the air conditioner and other electricals like the audio system, indicators and wipers when required, just like how a regular user would. We take pride in our testing data, which isn’t merely consistent, but also gives users an accurate indication of what they can expect in the real world.
