Maruti Suzuki will announce prices for its all-new flagship SUV, the 2022 Grand Vitara, on September 26. • Deliveries expected to begin in October

Maruti Grand Vitara: two powertrain options and AWD

The new Grand Vitara shares its powertrains with the Toyota Hyryder and, as such, gets the Suzuki-sourced 103hp, 1.5-litre K15C petrol mild-hybrid engine. This engine already does duty on many other Maruti Suzuki models – most recently, the new Brezza compact SUV. The engine is paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard, or an optional 6-speed torque converter automatic. With this engine, the Grand Vitara gets an option of Suzuki’s All-Grip AWD system.

Additionally, the Grand Vitara also gets a Toyota-sourced 92hp, 3-cylinder, 1.5-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine paired to an electric motor that makes 79hp and 141Nm of torque. Combined, the hybrid powertrain makes 115hp and is paired to an e-CVT gearbox. The Grand Vitara boasts a company claimed efficiency of 27.97kpl.

Maruti Grand Vitara: long feature list, safety tech

The Grand Vitara comes in six trim levels and as Maruti Suzuki’s flagship SUV, it's loaded with features like a 360-degree camera, wireless charger, ambient lighting, connected car technology with Google and Siri voice compatibility. In terms of safety, the Grand Vitara is well-kitted with features like ESP, hill-hold assist, tyre pressure monitoring system, all-wheel disc brakes and six airbags.

Maruti Grand Vitara: unique Suzuki family design; interior

Unlike some of the previous products from the Suzuki-Toyota alliance in India, the Hyryder and the Grand Vitara look quite different from one another. The Maruti SUV adopts a more aggressive look with a sharp nose and a wide grille with a prominent chrome strip in between. In profile, both look similar, but the Grand Vitara has a different alloy wheel design and more splashes of chrome.

On the inside, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara looks similar to the Hyryder with the only major differentiating factor being the various colour schemes. Both get the same steering wheel design that is also seen on other, newer Maruti Suzuki models. Even the AC controls, vents and power window switches are the same.

Maruti Grand Vitara: rivals in India

The Grand Vitara enters the hotly contested midsize SUV segment with well-established rivals like the Hyundai CretaKia SeltosVolkswagen TaigunSkoda Kushaq and the Toyota Hyryder. Bookings for the Grand Vitara are already underway for a token amount of Rs 11,000 and deliveries will begin from October.
