Suzuki Motor Gujarat (SMG), the 100 percent subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corporation that produces vehicles for the Japanese brand in India, has completed construction of the Gujarat Plant No. 2 and started production of the Maruti Suzuki Swift hatchback, earlier this month.
Suzuki Motor Corp had set up the SMG subsidiary in March 2014, with an aim to secure production ability in preparation for the automobile market growth in India, along with expansion of exports from our country. While Plant No. 1 began operations in February 2017, Plant No. 2 and the Powertrain Plant were under construction at that point.
Plant No. 1 produces the hatchbacks likes the Baleno and Swift, while Plant No. 2 produces the just the Swift. Both plants have an annual production capability of 2,50,000 units, which makes Suzuki Motor Gujarat’s total capacity increase to 5,00,000 units. Together with Maruti Suzuki’s production ability of 15 lakh units, Suzuki’s production capability of automobiles in India will now be a whopping 20 lakh units.
The company’s total automobile sales in 2018 in the country were 20 lakh units (109 percent, year-on-year growth) and production was pegged at 18.7 lakh million units (108 percent, year-on-year growth). Along with Plant No. 2, the Powertrain Plant has also begun operating. Plant No. 3 is scheduled to start operations in 2020.
