Maruti Suzuki recently announced at its dealer conference that it is working on a bevy of new products for our market, set launch over the next three years. One of these upcoming models is a three-row SUV (internally known as the Y17), which will take on the Hyundai Alcazar

  • New three-row SUV expected to use Ertiga’s platform
  • Will likely come with 6 and 7 seat layouts
  • Will use Maruti’s 1.5-litre, petrol engine

Maruti three-row SUV: what do we know so far?

While details of the upcoming three-row SUV are scarce right now, our industry source has speculated that the model will utilise the Ertiga’s platform. Launch of this new SUV is still some time away. Furthermore, it is likely that Maruti might just replace the XL6 – the Ertiga’s more premium derivative – with this new three-row SUV.

In terms of the interiors, we expect the new SUV to come with both a 6- and 7-seat layout. Equipment-wise, too, the new SUV is likely to improve upon what the current top-spec XL6 gets. It will come with features like a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Andriod Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control, automatic headlights and cruise control.

Powering Maruti’s new three-row SUV will the same 1.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine seen in other models like the Ciaz and Vitara Brezza (where it puts out 105hp). While the output figures for the new SUV are yet to be announced, Maruti could add some additional pep to the engine and improved mild-hybrid tech for better efficiency, to help it compete with the likes of the petrol-powered Hyundai Alcazar and MG Hector Plus.

Other Maruti Suzuki models in development

At the moment, Maruti is readying a heavily updated Baleno hatchback, as well as a major update for the Brezza. It is also worth mentioning that an updated version of the XL6 has been spied testing on Indian roads with high levels of camouflage.
