Maserati is planning to introduce a hotter, GTS-spec version of its Levante SUV which will share its Ferrari-made, 3.8-litre, twin-turbo V8 motor with the Quattroporte GTS.

As the engine makes 530hp in the Quattroporte GTS, this will bring the Levante GTS in direct competition with the 550hp Porsche Cayenne Turbo and the upcoming Range Rover Velar SVR that is also expected with 550hp.

The more focused SUV will come with bespoke chassis settings to offer better on-road performance though at the expense of ride quality as the air suspension will be tuned to improve body control.

The Levante GTS will distinguish itself from its standard siblings by sporting GTS badges inside and out, larger alloy wheels, more aggressive bumpers and carbon-fibre trim on the inside.

After the international launch of the Levante GTS, Maserati will add a hybrid variant to its range. The hybrid will be powered by a V6 engine paired to an electric motor that is shared with the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. It offers about 53km of pure electric range.
