Mercedes has launched its first product for 2023 – the AMG E 53 4Matic+ Cabriolet – at a starting price of Rs 1.30 crore (ex-showroom). This makes it Rs 24 lakh more expensive than the E 53 sedan that's already on sale. The convertible will be the fourth 53-badged product in India after the E 53 sedan, GLE 53 coupe-SUV and the EQS 53 sedan.

  1. E53 Cabriolet powered by 435hp, 3.0-litre turbo-petrol engine
  2. Does 0-100kph in a claimed 4.6sec; top-speed limited to 250kph
  3. Has no direct rival in Indian market

The E 53 Cabriolet is essentially the two-door, four-seat convertible version of the E 53 sedan. This is not the first time that Mercedes is bringing the open-top version of the E-Class to India. It launched the previous generation model in 2010 and then its facelift in 2015. While the previous iterations of the E-Class convertible were available only in standard guise, Mercedes is bringing the more powerful AMG avatar this time around.

Mercedes-AMG E 53 Cabriolet: powertrain details

Like its sedan counterpart, the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Cabriolet is powered by a 435hp, 520Nm, 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. It comes paired to an integrated starter generator that puts out an additional 21hp and 250Nm of torque. Additionally, it gets Dynamic Select driving modes and AMG’s Ride Control+ air suspension.

The power is sent to all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission and the carmaker says that the Cabriolet can sprint from 0-100 in 4.6sec. The top speed is electronically limited to 250kph.

Mercedes-AMG E 53 Cabriolet: exterior design details

The E 53 Cabriolet looks similar to the sedan from the front, and like other AMG models, it gets the signature AMG ‘Panamericana grille’ and sporty front bumpers. In profile, the E 53 Cabriolet adorns a relatively plain design with a subtle belt line. Another design highlight is the prominent chrome strip on the top of the door. However, the real talking point is the drop-top silhouette with a two-door layout.

The India-spec model comes with 19-inch alloy wheels as standard and five colour options. The fabric roof, on the other hand, can be had in four colour options. At the rear, the E 53 Cabriolet features sleek horizontal tail-lamps and quad exhausts.

Mercedes-AMG E 53 Cabriolet: interiors and equipment

The interior of the E 53 Cabriolet looks largely similar to the E 53 sedan, with the highlight being the twin-screen set-up for the instrument cluster and the infotainment screen. The cluster is highly customisable and gives a variety of information to the driver. The E 53 Cabriolet also features a leather-wrapped, five-spoke AMG Performance steering wheel.

In terms of equipment, the E 53 AMG gets neck heaters for front passengers and an AIRCAP wind-stop system, which is a flap at the top of the windshield that activates automatically to prevent wind noise at high speeds. It also comes with an onboard racetrack management system called AMG Track Pace, which is essentially a virtual race engineer. Apart from that, it also gets 64-colour ambient lighting, a heated steering wheel and a Burmester premium surround sound system.

The E 53 Cabriolet will have no direct rivals in the Indian market.
