  • All-electric G-Class could be offered in two variants

Mercedes confirmed in 2019 that the G-Class will be a getting an all-electric variant. Now, according to this website, the company will preview the EQG in concept form at the IAA Mobility show set to take place in Munich, Germany, from September 7–12, 2021.

Moreover, at a recent press conference, Britta Seeger, who is a member of the Board of Management at Daimler AG and responsible for marketing and sales of Mercedes-Benz cars, revealed the launch timeline of the production-spec, electric G-class. She said, “In 2024 we will launch our full-electric G-Class as well. It will continue the great story of our G-series.”

Mercedes EQG: design and features

The Mercedes EQG will share its boxy and upright stance with its combustion-engined sibling, though it will likely sport some design tweaks to the front fascia and other areas, in line with the rest of the EQ model range.

As the EQG will be based on the G-Class, it can be expected to have a high ground clearance, short overhangs, good approach and departure angles and drive modes, imparting it substantial off-road capabilities.

Mercedes EQG: expected powertrains

As reported by us earlier, the production-spec Mercedes EQG will have two versions – EQG 560 and EQG 580. The EQG 580 is likely to have an electric powertrain similar to the EQS 580 sedan, which packs a 108kWh battery and electric motors putting out 523hp and 856Nm of torque. The EQG 560 will be positioned below the EQG 580. However, no official performance figures have been revealed by Mercedes so far.

In India, Mercedes launched the GLC-based EQC in 2020. The EQS sedan is expected to land on Indian shores next year. Moreover, Mercedes is also looking to assemble its EQ models in India.

While it’s too early to tell if the EQG will make it to our market, Mercedes does offer the diesel G 350d 4MATIC and the petrol-powered AMG G63 in India.
