Mercedes has revealed the line-up of new models it will be launching in India this year.

First off the blocks will be the new-generation GL-class full-size luxury SUV, which is slated to launch very soon. The seven-seat GL adopts styling cues from the M-class launched in 2012, and will sit above it in the company’s line-up.

Hot on its heels will be the much-anticipated diesel version of the B-class sports tourer – likely to be a 1.8-litre, 134bhp motor, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, in the form of the B200 CDI. This should add more appeal to the B-class, which has until now only been available with a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine.

The big news is Mercedes has confirmed that the CLA-class compact saloon, only recently revealed in production guise at the Detroit Motor Show, will make its way to Indian shores sometime this year. The CLA is the third model to be based on Mercedes’ new modular front-wheel-drive architecture (MFA) platform. It follows on from the B-class and A-class, with which it shares its mechanical package, electronic architecture and interior appointments. The new model will sit beneath the C-class in Mercedes’ line-up.

Mercedes will also launch the A-class hatchback in India by summer 2013, also built on the MFA platform. While the B-class was launched with only a petrol engine, the A-class will be offered in both petrol and diesel guises right from launch. The A-class will share its engines with the B-class, so expect an A180 petrol and a A200 CDI. It will get a similar, high-quality interiors to the B-class already on sale here.
