The MG 4 EV has scored an impressive 5-star rating in the latest round of Euro NCAP safety tests. The midsize electric hatchback was unveiled in July this year and MG India will showcase the MG 4 EV at the upcoming Auto Expo 2023.
If launched in India, the MG 4 EV hatchback will rival the likes of the BYD Atto 3 and the upcoming Kona Electric facelift.

MG 4 EV Euro NCAP test results
The MG 4 EV scored 83 percent in adult occupant tests, getting 31.6 points out of 38. It also scored 80 percent in child occupant tests, with a score of 39.5 out of 49 points. In safety systems tests, MG’s EV hatchback got 78 percent, earning 12.6 points out of a total of 16. The lowest score the MG 4 earned was 75 percent in the vulnerable road users tests, scoring 40.6 out of 54 points. While the car tested was left-hand drive, the rating is also applicable for the right-hand-drive version.
The BYD Atto 3 also received a 5-star rating in the Euro NCAP safety tests. In comparison, the BYD had a better score in the adult occupant and child occupants tests, with 91 and 89 percent scores, respectively. However, in the vulnerable road users and safety systems test, the Atto 3 scored slightly lower than the 4 EV, with 69 and 74 percent, respectively.
MG 4 EV: what is it?
The MG 4 EV is a born electric vehicle based on parent company SAIC’s modular scalable platform where the battery pack forms an integral part of the platform structure. The MG 4 is available with two battery packs – a 51kWh and a 64kWh. While the former produces 170hp, the latter produces 203hp. Torque output for both is rated at 250Nm and both come with a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive configuration.
In terms of charging, using a 7kW AC charger, the batteries of the MG 4 EV can be topped up from 10 percent to 100 percent in 7.5 hours and 9 hours for the 51kWh and 64kWh battery packs, respectively. However, using a 150kW charger, the batteries can be charged from 10 percent to 80 percent in 35 minutes and 39 minutes, respectively.
MG 4 EV: India launch details
MG India is currently evaluating a market launch for the 4 EV and it could come here as a completely built unit (CBU) or a completely knocked down unit (CKD). If it does come to India, the MG 4 EV could be launched after the Air EV.
