Maruti Suzuki today announced the opening of bookings for the new-gen Celerio ahead of its launch on November 10. Bookings can be made either on Maruti’s website or at their Arena dealerships for a token amount of Rs 11,000. The second-gen Celerio is a grounds-up new model underpinned by the Heartect modular platform, boasting a fresh new design, brand new interiors and even gets a new engine under its hood.

  • Expected to be larger than outgoing model
  • Underpinned by Maruti's Heartect platform

2021 Maruti Suzuki Celerio: what do we know so far?

As mentioned, the new Celerio will be underpinned by Maruti’s modular Heartect platform that also underpins the WagonR. The new car will be longer, wider, taller and will also have a longer wheelbase. Some Arena dealers have already begun receiving the new Celerio, spy shots of which have previewed the design of upcoming hatchback. And it's a complete departure from the outgoing model.

Compared to the squarish looks of the outgoing hatch, the new Celerio is more rounded in its design, devoid of any angular elements. It also gets a larger glass house and a tapering roofline. The headlamps and the tail lamps are rounded too, and it gets darkened alloy wheels on top-spec variants, possibly 14-inchers. The front bumper is well sculpted with black contrasting trim, while the rear has a much simpler design.

On the inside, Maruti has completely revised the dashboard as well. The highlight is, of course, Maruti’s SmartPlay Studio infotainment system operated through a 7-inch screen, a first for the Celerio. It also gets newly designed AC vents, revised centre console and a much roomier cabin. There are also some familiar elements from other Maruti models, like the steering wheel and instrument cluster that has come from the WagonR, and some switchgear that’s shared with the S-Presso.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio: new K10C engine to replace older 1.0-litre unit

Under the hood, the new Celerio will be powered by Maruti’s K10C engine which is the naturally aspirated version of the one that was seen on the now discontinued Baleno RS. The engine comes with DualJet technology with two fuel injectors per cylinder instead of one, resulting in more precise control and finer fuel atomisation, according to Maruti Suzuki. Also, the new Celerio will come with idle start/stop system, further aiding fuel economy. In fact, Maruti is betting big on the new Celerio being the most fuel-efficient petrol car in the country, with an estimated fuel economy of 26kpl.

The new K10C 1.0 litre three-cylinder naturally aspirated engine is expected to produce slightly more power than the outgoing version’s 68hp and will come mated to either a 5-speed manual or an AMT automatic gearbox.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio: rivals

The new-gen Maruti Suzuki Celerio will rival the likes of the Tata Tiago, the Hyundai Santro and Datsun Go. Compared to the outgoing model, which was priced between Rs 4.66 lakh-6 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), we can expect a slight bump in the prices.
